If you didn’t know already I am lucky enough to live just outside the beautiful city that is Cambridge. A recent visit from my bro & his girlfriend meant that we got to be tourists for the day so I thought it would be a good time to share a few of my favourites if you live nearby or were contemplating a little trip to the city.
Now there is a lot to do if you’re visiting Cambridge – museums like the Fitzwilliam or a wander around the beautiful colleges – but a trip to Cambridge just isn’t complete without a punt on the river so this was our first port of call. It was a beautiful sunny day so the river was busy – always fun to watch for collisions! – but we managed to get a self hire punt from Scudamore’s without any trouble.
You can get guided tours where you share a boat with others but my other half is a pretty good punter & it’s always good fun to have a go yourself, not that we move very far when I do it! I’d come prepared with prosecco & strawberries & we had a very pleasant trip down the river admiring all the colleges & trying to listen in on the professional tours as we went past!
Next up was lunch & with the foodie scene exploding in Cambridge at the moment we were spoilt for choice in places to take them. Here were a few contenders & definite places to check out on a visit to the city…
- Bread & Meat – I would be confident to say one of THE best sandwiches I have ever eaten… seriously a must try…
- The Pint Shop – a favourite not just for their amazing range of craft beers & gin but also super tasty bar snacks – think giant scotch eggs & sausage rolls – & a restaurant upstairs if you want more of a substantial eat
We were after something filling but not too formal so there was only really one option which was The Smokeworks. One of the telegraphs top 10 bbq restaurants in the uk their mission is to serve slow cooked food fast & they never disappoint! Slow cooked meats with delicious sides, craft beers & amazing milkshakes there really isn’t anything not to love & I wish I had a pic of the food to show you but it just went too damn fast!
Full to the brim we headed for Jesus Green to lay on the grass & chill in the sun. Cambridge is lucky to have lots of green space for sunny days & everyone was definitely out & making the most of the good weather.
Ice creams were obviously needed – always room for pudding – & we grabbed one for the park. The new place for ice cream in Cambridge – 6 ice cream – was super busy so I’m still waiting to try their treats! Feeling suitable rested we then had a wander around the city taking in the sights, including the popular wisteria which springs up all over the city & is a beauty to behold.
So I hope this has given a little snapshot of what Cambridge has to offer! I am looking forward to some more Cambridge fun times with some fellow small business owners soon, networking on a punt, only in Cambridge!
Hope you have a lovely weekend planned & the sun is shining where you are!
