But let’s find out a bit more about this month’s flower, why it is the flower for March and what it supposedly says about you if you’re born in this month like me!

What is March’s birth month flower?

March’s birth month flower is the sunny Daffodil, known for being one of the first signs of spring when they pop up, we are used to seeing them line our roads and bring that sunny splash of yellow to herald a new season. Marking the end of winter and springs arrival, daffodils are associated with sunnier days to come, bringing a little cheer after the grey days of winter and are seen as a sign of good luck.

Traditionally daffodils are bright yellow but some varieties are white, pink and even green. There are approximately 13,000 different varieties of daffodil and they are native to Northern Europe. The classic daffodil is made up of six petals and a trumpet cone that is frilled at the edge.

Although the Daffodil is a perfect gift to give for a March birthday it is also associated with 10 year wedding anniversaries too.

What does the birth flower say about you?

Daffodils are known to represent new beginnings, prosperity and happiness and it’s not hard to see why, with their sunny yellow colour and being the most common sign that spring is on it’s way. As they usually come into full flower at Easter time they are therefore connected to the renewal of life and the resurrection. too.

Although it is most common to see them begin to bloom in March it is believed that if a daffodil blooms on New Year’s Day it brings good luck for the entire year.

Daffodils are also believed to represent inspiration, creativity and forgiveness too and it is said that it is unlucky to gift a single daffodil flower, so always make sure to give a bunch!

Fun facts about the Daffodil

  1. The daffodil symbolises good fortune in China and is the symbol of their new year.

  2. The bulb of the daffodil is poisonous so has limited uses for natural remedies but they can be used to relieve pain, asthmas and colds and there is currently research into the use of the narcissus plant for treating Alzheimer’s.

  3. They are the national emblem of Wales, with the leek, and are worn on St David’s Day.

  4. In Arab countries it is believed to be an aphrodisiac and a cure for baldness.

  5. During medieval times it was believed if a daffodil drooped when you looked at it it was an omen of death.

  6. Daffodils have been around in the UK since the 17th century and even Shakespeare was a big fan of them.
